Apogee Software was founded in 1987 by Scott Miller, creator of the famous KROZ series of ASCII-based games, among many others. Over time Apogee grew to become one of the premier shareware developers / publishers, including games such as the Commander Keen series, Wolfenstein 3D, Duke Nukem, and many more. Miller's model of providing the first game in the series for free, and charging for the rest, became known as the "Apogee Model". Apogee changed their public name to 3D Realms in 1996, although they have recently revived the Apogee name.
