One thing I've been looking into recently is getting the best sound going - as far as I can tell you need at least three things to get the best of all worlds. A General Midi card/module A MT32 compatible card/module A Yamaha XG compatible card/module (though this is less necessary) Plus a gravis ult...

yep, so did mine until the power supply died! It is insanely heavy and impossible to find a replacement for it.. I considered doing an atx power supply mod, but I don't want a frankenmac. I used to have the dream of building it up into an avid workstation.. but think I'll have to let that one go now...

yep, you really have to clarify which version(s) you are talking about. Classic mac os compares well with dos based versions of windows (windows 1.0-ME), but not with NT derived windows (NT,2k,XP). If you're talking about gaming purposes, windows has pretty much ruled the roost since win95 and direc...

Yup jmmijo is right, 30 pin simms go up to 16MB and 72 pin simms go up to 128MB In the PC world, not many 486 motherboards supported 16MB 30 pin, and mainly Pentium Pro chipsets supported 64Mb+ simms of 72 Pin. You'll find lots of non-pc related machines that support larger simms though (68k macinto...

duke3d used to work good over kali (sort of an IPX emulation service) - think that has died a bit however. Haven't tried this online, but Rancidmeat's port works good on a LAN: http://www.rancidmeat.com/project.php3?id=1 Use DukesterX as a multiplayer launcher for this: http://forums.dukesterx.net/p...

I got very frustrated with U8 (couldn't find an exit in the underground caverns) until finally I caved in and finished it with a walkthrough. In the end it had a decent plot, but it takes too long to get into it. Other issues I had with it are that the upgraded graphics they used meant the game was ...

Himem is a bit different from EMS, it allows you to load stuff into previously unusable areas under 1MB. It also was a bit of a hack. Well, you could be right RE:CTCM it was some time ago I tried this and maybe I didn't exhaust all options. I'm happy with my setup atm though and see no advantage in ...

When they give a speed rating on the chip, that is the max speed it will operate at - they aren't saying it is designed to run at 70ns for example. Much like you can use PC133 SDRAM in a PC100 system. I'd say go for 60ns just to be sure. EDO is faster than FPM, but only if it is supported by your mo...

I went for an amd 5x86 133 - dunno why, it just seemed like the best of the 486 cpus Forget the mobo chipset - but I made sure it supported the WB caching in the AMD cpu 32Mb RAM - don't need any more and 64Mb counts too slowly Matrox Millenium II 4Mb for nice picture quality (and VESA support) .. t...

I think you should run CTCM.exe and see how you go - it should hopefully autoconfigure around the onboard sound. If you don't get it working I remember the awe32 not sounding all that good with duke3d anyway (personally I thought the guitar sounded a bit 'funny'), so not a huge loss if that is what ...

Although I think you can play the ordinary DOS version of duke3d in windows in compatibility mode without sound.. the best way is to use one of the ports that were made following the release of the duke3d source code. There are two main ones: Jonof's port - which has good 3d support, the option of u...

EMS is just a hack to get around the 640k limit - developed by quarterdeck originally (qemm) and purchased by microsoft who then incorporated it in dos as emm386. The drivers can't know about the memory until a memory manager is loaded. The mind boggles at why origin used their own memory manager ho...

Well it makes sense that it wouldn't eat any conventional memory when ems is enabled would it - that's pretty much the whole point of using emm386. Yeah well pretty much the entire point of building my dosbox was to play the ultima series though - so it was significant to me - and the issues I had w...

Oops, I meant Conventional Memory.. you need 590k or so for ultima (this is a factor as you can't use EMM386 because Ultima VII uses its own memory manager). Can you run ultima VII with full sound and sfx with no issues? I think you'll find that it is a well accepted fact that MT32 produces the best...
