DOS Games Discussion

I'm trying to get an old game to work(Janes ATf) in dos and I need to get my cd to work. I have heard you need to do something with this to use the cd drive in dos. I have it on a dos startup disk and i have no idea what to do with it to get it to use my cd drive in dos.

Nevermind I got it to work.

I edited the empty autoexec.bat and added a line for the mouse.com file i put on the disk and it worked!

Thats why I'm trying to run my game(daggerfall, I had an old thread trying to get help. help elsewhere said to make a dos startup disk) In dos i could get in fine but I can't do anything because i don't have any mouse drivers loaded. I had found a bunch of dos boot disks with mouse drivers on them, ...

Um, could you explain that a little more?

I have xp pro, and it seems to look like add/remove programs doesn't have that in xp.

on a side note: If those are there for backwards compatability, why do so many old games not work properly.

now thats screwed up. both autoexec.bats on c: and on the floppy are 0kb and there's nothing in either.

Exactly how would I go about modifying the autoexec.bat file?

I've been trying to get daggerfall to work, so a suggested solution was a dos startup disk. I can get into the game fine, but i have no mouse. they said to load mouse drivers for dos on the disk and to use commands for dos to use them.

How do I do all of that?

When it worked I had my card set exactly the same as it is now. I also updated my drivers but DF didn't work before I updated them.

I had the color depth to 32-bit when it worked, so that shouldn't be it, but I'll try it.

That didn't help. When I run the game, it goes into dos and then i get a black screen. I can alt-tab and get back into windows to close it. I think something disabled my vga if thats even possible. look around on the internet, there's a 2000/xp/nt installer that worked for me. make sure you have the cd path right in the z.cfg file for the arena2 dirctory.
