Australian Floods

Had some concern posted on my facebook page, so I wanted to let anyone on here that is worried know that I am safe and dry for the moment.
It doesn't look like we will get any of the brunt of the flood and should remain fairly dry for the next few days.
Many of my friends are affected though and numerous other people in south east queensland. It really is a horrible tragedy.

Always problems with those Aussies, if it ain't half the country that's burning it's the other half that's drowning.

I think I may still have those pics you sent me many years ago, with that flood you had back then.

I work with several Australian soldiers, one of them from Queensland. We've been talking about the floods at work a good deal. I'm amazed at the sheer amount of land that's been submerged.

Interestingly, we have a flash flood warning tonight. Hope it doesn't flood too bad... we're right next to the ocean.

wtf, floods one one side, fires on the other. Why don't people just all move to the middle? Or scoop the flood waters from the flooded side and dump them on the burning side?

Then they'd have massive fogs everywhere.

I'm doing fine. Just got back from a two week holiday involving travel through Melbourne and Tasmania though, so was lucky enough to see flooding in two different states as well as hear from a number of people that both had fires and had floods. Not directly involved in anything, but entirely surrounded by everything, and hearing plenty of stories from both sides of the country. Enough to make me quite irked at the amount of regurgitated news that everyone loves repeating. It's bad.. But not anywhere near as bad as it could've been, and a hell of a lot better than our foreign counterparts that have suffered similar disasters the past decade or so. I admit, it's certainly not good.. But there's a hell of a lot of unnecessary whinging going on over the TV and Media to. When Pakistan had their floods.. How many thousands of people died? When Iran and Bangladesh had theirs a few years back, deaths hit somewhere near the 40K mark. Our floods? Less than 20 deaths, total. In other words, could've been worse. Got caught in the eye of the storm of the flooding out Tassie way though - Was travelling, everything looked fine the whole time, while on the radio, we were constantly hearing how bad everything was supposed to be around us. Could see storms ahead and behind, but we were fine. Kept coming up against quite a few collapsed roads, a *lot* of roadkill (rabbits, wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, devils, feral cats and etc), flooded paddocks and etc. Travelling first out west, thinking the east was flooded, then the radio said the east had cleared up and the storm was heading west, so went back east again, to get away from the west. First Brisbane gets done in, but Melbourne looks fine - So off I go. The moment I leave for Tassie, Victoria and NSW gets hit, then a day or two in Tassie, and I'm barely keeping away from flooding out that way. Yet don't directly experience it. Yay for me I suppose. *rolls eyes*

Worst part for me, personally, probably would've been that when I was staying in Melbourne, the person I was staying with had a giant leak in their roof, directly above where they told me to leave my baggage. Found out about it in time to prevent my clothes, cameras, mobile, books and etcetera from taking any water damage, but my passport and boarding details, which were sitting on the top of my luggage, got completely soaked through - Had to sit in front of an electric heater for about an hour, carefully prying apart each page of my soaked and glued-together passport, drying it off so that I could still use it. Succeeded in the end, and everything was fine. Albeit, annoying. Even more annoyingly, however - At the airport, both there and back, each time, all four flights - Security had slacked off something nasty and not a single person actually even bothered to ask to check my passport the whole time. And to think! I could've been travelling using a fake name and smuggling millions of dollars worth of drugs, and nobody would've been none the wiser! Oh well.. Back to my day job I go.. *rolls eyes, big time*

You're actually required to use a passport to travel within Australia?

Not in the protection of rights sense, but in the sense of having some form of identification to prove who I am, that I'm not travelling illegally or stealing the ticket, I thought something along the likes of a passport would be required. But apparently not. Might steal a name from one of you lot next time I travel domestically.
