Serial Cable on COM1 vs COM2 using IR

Post by zonexero »

I had another question to all of you, has anyone had any luck using two old laptops and connecting via serial on IR port? I easily got the serial port on com 1 working from two laptops but using Com Port 2 with IR does not seem to work, maybe too slow for a connection? I am pretty sure I have all the setting correct but I guess not possible?

There seem to be some variants of IR protocols, and it can be a bit finicky getting the light pointing right. The speed should be able to go to normal serial speeds, like 115kBaud I think, but I'm not sure if it worked full duplex; but then I've never tried hooking up two laptops using it (I used it to connect my old phone to the latop, since that was the only option at the time) the range max was about a meter or so as I recall.

Maybe something more to dig out here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_Data_Association
