The Internet
What connection are you using. If you have more than one pc with the internet, use the one with the slower modem.

Zoltrix fan
I've had excellent luck with a Zoltrix 56k. At an auction 3 years ago I got a pile of modems. all unboxed without manuals. Being a tech, I separated the Winmodems (yuk) from the Hardware modems (yea). In the hardware pile I used obvious baud speed labels into separate piles. The final half dozen unknowns were cut again by chip date; dividing line 1996. The Zoltrix was traced out by looking up the 4 digit number in the corner and the Rockwell chip ID on Google. With a generic Rockwell driver I got the S codes to readout for the manufacturer. From there the Zoltrix sites gave me info. I found it had flash updatable code to V.90 and I did so. Been surfing at 45k-55k ever since. One problem.... it's ISA and resticts my momboard upgrades. It's survived lightning storms and cats discharging on the phone line. Be very unhappy to let this good old guy go someday.

Re: My internet connection sucks!
Some modems are flash updatable, esp the 28.8 and 33.6 models. First check the ROM date and get other info on that modem by going to (in Win95-ME, anyway) the My Computer\Control Panel\Modem and do the get info routine. The S-register readouts will help in determining if you have the latest dated update. BTW: the get info should tell the modem's/main chip true name. This can be important. Print/write the info and go on a driver/update safari. Usually Google can handle this with the name of your modem alone or with "driver" attached. Specifically I would check the manufacturer's site or a driver site like modemdrivers.com (etc) for the flash file. Download it and follow the info from the site or in the file on how to the update. It can usually be run in Windoze but a reboot is common. You can also open the modem case and look for the flash chip. It's a near bonified hint you can update the ROM code. Thusly, Gwasshoppa, shall you be able to up that baud rate for a big mantis smile.computer_person wrote:On my good computer I have a 28.8 kbps external modem but its capable of 56kbps  On my sucky computer I have NO internet connection
NOTE: that 56k result you have is likely from the max speed the computer talks to the modem alone (without the phone line being involved). Unplug the phone line and test the modem again. You will still get a com response. And then there's the posibility of lousy phone lines.....
What's the "sucky" PC's problem? No modem? No Windoze connection savy? No Windoze? Some one here can fix you up, somehow.
And remember, no one at this site has a sucky PC unless it's quite literally toast and propping open a door.
