Hi,

Here's my poll on CPU brands. I like Intel because they invented the x86 CPU line. AMD and the others are copycats.

How about you?

if i was a member i whould vote for AMD, there cheap and are long lasting

I liked amd for the 386/40, 486/120 and 133, k6-2's
I liked intel for 8086, 286, 486/66. All P1's -P3's

My AMD seems to run more efficiently than my Intel Pentium 4 and it's a hell of a lot cheaper so I'll go with it-though my opinion may be biased by the fact the Pentium is the family computer and gets abused more often. (Still, it's suposively 2.8 times as fast)

An explanation about the other brands:

NEC, Hitachi, and maybe about a dozen others made 8088/8086 clones. I heard that Intel's factory was too slow in the old time so they subcontracted the CPU design to those guys.

In the 486 generation and earlier, IBM made some CPUs for their own systems. Also, NexGen made some Pentium 1 clones. After the Pentium 1, the pie was pretty much divided in two, Intel and AMD.

Cyrix and some other company made chils well after the pentium 1 era

But did they still make x86 CPUs or do they make calculator/PDA/etc. chips?

The latest Cyrix x86 CPU I heard about was the MII, a Pentium 1 class CPU.

The cyrix III class chip got into the 600mhz range at least and was a socket 370 (P3/Celeron) compatible chip.

Still on my first PC, and it uses a P4, so it's Intel for me. I think my Dreamcast has an Hitachi CPU, though. Also, my PS2 has an "Emotion Engine".
