King Kong

Post by SpaceFans »

Okay, saw Kong today.
Pretty good movie, although I do have some quibbles about it.
For one, several of the fight scenes just seem to be there for the sake of being there. And the motivation of several of the dinosaurs is suspect. These things are carnivores, they kill to eat. Once they've taken down a big old dinosaur, they're not going to keep chasing after a piddly little human, its just not worth the calories they're going to expend in the chase. I mean, how many of you here would run an obstical course for a single chicken mcnugget? Or the scene with all these mutant vampire bats living in Kong's lair, who suddenly turn and attack him. Wha? Kong isn't a dumb animal, he's not going to live in a cave where he's the main course. Or if they had never attacked him before, why now?

Or another one that grabbed me. When Denham and company capture Kong, he goes on his little speech about how he's going to show the big guy off to the world. He specifically calls him Kong. How did he know that name? The only time the natives had really spoken it was when Ann was getting sacrificed. So how did he know what the ape's name was?

Although, I did like the little touches here and there. A shield and a pair of spears from the original movie were hanging on the ship walls as decorations, and one of the crates below deck had a sign mentioning an animal that Peter Jackson created for one of his previous movies.

All in all, a good movie, no doubt about it. It was just a little too drawn out, IMO, and there were definate moments when I sat back and went "Now wait a minute...", and there's nothing worse (IMO) than when a movie just totally kills the suspension of disbelief and reminds me that I'm sitting in a theater watching a movie. So yeah, overall good, but its got some rough spots.

I thought it was really bad: there were really only 2 bits that stood out, the fight with the 3 dinos and him swatting at the airplanes. There were other scenes that looked good, it's just that they weren't memorable and usually had no purpose (like you say, with the bats or the stampede).

It just seemed like he was trying to cover every genre of movie there is, and in doing so made it 2-3 times longer then it should have been. For example, I think a lot of the stuff that happened on the ship could be cut. I also feel like some scenes were drawn out forever, such as Ann 'entertaining' kong when they first met. It seemed like the sort of scene put in there for Homer Simpson's level of humour 'hehe, funny monkey'.

I think I'd feel different if it went half as long, but I saw the cinema practically empty with half the people in there walking out. It's not that it's bad in the way most movies are bad (which is usually no plot, stupid levels of humour etc.), it's jus tthat it felt like it was being fluffed out for way longer than it should have been.

Overall, I did not like it that much. There beginning was quite slow moving. It took them so long before reach the island scene.

I agree with you to a certain extent. The dinosaurs, cockroaches, insects and bats is supposed to add excitment but it's not that fun. The Kong fight scene had to be there, afterall it part of the story. The others takes the focus away although it's mean to make it not so boring. The close ups in the jungle and city with special effects are the only parts nice in the movie. Other than that, the plot is just too long (round about). I was almost falling asleep watching the movie. Had to make myself still awake till the action portion while only occurs in the 2nd half of the movie.
