Because I've seen people saying they buy stuff on Ebay or find parts hard to find...
Join your local freecycle.org email list. I've found a pentium, 2 C64s and a Vic20 plus copies of King's Quest 3 ("I was going to toss it out but thought I'd post it in case", said the lady. "Eeeeep! I want them," said I)and other assorted computer games.
You can also offer up any old stuff you don't need as well. Also, try a search for a local computer recycling list.
Remember your local Sally Ann, Goodwill and thrift stores too. My daughter's 17 inch CRT was $2.50, my little Apple SE $7.50 and a 486 from which I've scavenged many great parts was $5.00...All purchased at the Salvation Army.

Hmm.. interesting.. I just looked at the local board and it looks like it's 95% people wanting upscale stuff.. 'freezers, transmissions, newer PC games, laptops, optical mouses, internet ready computers' wtf? pift.. and then they try to pull at your heart strings.. "for a disabled woman, for my 3 month old"
I guess the pesimest in me is taking over.
I'd rather just hoof it to a Salvation Army, pawn shop, or Ebay

I'll work on it later
I think what people offer and post as wanted depends on the economy of the area. Computer equipment tends to be in demand all over, so if something is posted people who camp out on the computer and hit refresh on their email every 5 seconds will tend to snag it first.
Most people hand the decent equipment to friends or reletives first anyway.

In Belgium and the Netherlands we have Gratis op te halen.

I have an old DOS 6.0/Win3.1 PC packed up in a box in my garage.
