Cavewars has caught my attention due to obvious similarities with the
Heroes of Might and Magic game series, but with several twists, including the magic/technology mash-up and the introduction of several layers of underground caverns where the game took place (per map/level), which I believe was done earlier than the surface/dungeon (or dungeon/dungeon) layer distinction within a single map was introduced in
Heroes of Might and Magic III.
