Zone 66 to run on new PC

Post by Blueoriontiger »

Does anyone have a solution for the full version of Zone 66 to run in normal dos? The trial version I have will. But the full needs pure dos. I only have it on one old PC with 66 MHz, which is deteriorating quickly. I need some kind of patch for it to run in Windows 98 minimum, with music track at least. Help anyone?

Zone 66's most common error is a complaint about a protected mode program. Since Windows operates in protected mode, I'm certain you need to provide an isolated pure DOS environment like DOSBox, Bochs, VMWare, Virtual PC, or a DOS boot disk. Also, prevent HIMEM.SYS or other XMS drivers from loading (Zone 66 has its own way of using RAM above 640 KB and does not like other programs interfering).

It says cannot run with XMS driver. I've tried rebooting it without the driver, but it holds up and says out of memory

Solved it! Go to the dosbox.conf file and look for two values:

ems=true
xms=true

Change these to false and, TADA!

How do you open the config file?
Open it with any text editor, f.e. notepad (the Windows Editor).

Same way you did the EMS/XMS settings, except look for Sound Blaster values. Default should be:

Port:200
IRQ: 5
DMA: 1

If that doesn't work, get your soundcard configuration settings and match it to these. ;) B)
