Is there a way to actually play a co-op game in hot seat? If so then how?

You need to set your allies correctly. It depends on the map too. Some maps allow allies, some don't.

However, even if a map doesn't allow you to have allies, you can still play with your friend and decide that you don't attack each other - that's it.

Yeah my brother and I were messing around with the allies setting and shits for a couple of scenarios and we still haven't gotten it. Kept switching around user types for each of the colors. Guess I should just screw around a lil more then.

2 was the best one in my opinion. I like 3 but to me it just doesn't beat 2 hands down.

Same here. Although 3 does rock, when you add all these expansions etc.
