Can anyone help? Rise of the Triad install problems

I am running a Compaq Deskpro 575, which i recently bought to play old dos games on.

The problem is I cannot install Rise of the Triad off of the installer CD. I am running Windows 95, and get some error messages which stop the installation process.

The error message says: "You cannot run this graphics application windowed. The application will be suspended untill you switch it to full screen by pressing ALT+ENTER. Check the Properties to ensure they are correct."

(If there is a way i can post images of the problem to show you, i can show you three images: one of the installation process another of the error message and another of the screwed up screen before the error message. I need to know how to do this! I'm not sure..)

I think the problem is to do with the graphics. The graphics adatper is the Compaq Qvision PCI. I read the help files from the game CD which said that Compaq machines would need a special driver called FINDVGA.sys which is part of a SoftPaq called SPO117.ZIP. I download this today from the Compay FTP site. I installed it by putting a line of code in my Config.sys. When i restart the computer it should acknowledge the change and use my monitor. But, it says that there is no VGA installed!!!!.

I have been to Compaqs website to get the updates for my machine, but i still get the messages.

Another thing i tried was copying the contents off the CD onto my HDD (Hard Disk Drive). But when i run the install program it says: W_InitFiles: No Files Found!

I have tried running the installation process in DOS which dosen't work.

Oh, and one final thing the Compaq Deskpro 575 is a Pentium running at 75 MHZ (a very early pentium), with 49MB of ram, a 4.3 GB HDD (to install my entire DOS game collection: Wolf3d, Doom 1, Doom2, Final Doom, Spear of Destiny, Spear of the Destiny: The Lost Episodes and Operation Body Count.) And of course it uses the Compaq QVison PCI graphics adapter and I am using a Goldstar StudioWorks 56i SVGA monitor.

Any idea whats the problem?

John.

I went to 3DRealms and downloaded the ROTT V1.2 CD Install help and used this patch to copy the installation files of the CD install Disk. It worked and i can play the game and use setup pretty well.

Thanks for that link.

Try running it from pure DOS. To do this, restart your computer and when it says "Starting Windows 95" press F8 and select "Command Prompt Only" and the familiar prompt shall appear:

C:\>

From there type the neccesary commands to the start the program and it should work.

Yeah...GameMaster the game will run ok in "pure DOS" as i have managed to install it without using the CD installer. It was the installation directly from the CD that simply wont run in pure DOS without going crazy during the install.

 What's that mean in english?

Probably you're booting dos in safe mode, which doesn't support CD-ROM's.
What's the letter for your CD-ROM drive?

my CD-ROM is D:....and when i say "pure dos" i mean i restart the machine in DOS mode and try and run the program.

I see........

Try this:
While running Win95, go to the start menu and press"Run." Type command and a DOS prompt will appear. It will say C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP. Make it full screen (ALT+ENTER) and change the directory to D: and type D:\setup or D:\install, whatever it's called.
