how do you get up the stairs in Monster Bash???

On the first level in Monster Bash with the faces (the ones on the walls that only hurt you if their eyes are lit up) how are you supposed to get up past that first floor? I've tried reading the books and everything and i can't figure it out!

also, does anyone know what the cheese has to do with it? thanks a million
