It's about this...Hotel...called California...that is really friendly and accomodating.
Haha. Yeah, addiction sounds like a good theory.
Yeah, I'd go with that. Lines like, "And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’" and "But they just can’t kill the beast" would suggest an addiction of some sort...
Maybe something to do with sex? I get the feeling of a brothel, with the repetition of the woman throughout and the description of "Mirrors on the ceiling,
The pink champagne on ice"...

(edit) and "they stab it with their steely knives and they just cant kill the beast", is directed at steely dan as an insult.

apparently they said that because of a line in one of steely dans song
so they said it as"you cant stop us steely dan"
