DOSGames.com Review: Rating: 2.5
Freaks! is an interesting 3D-ish FPS game from the mid 90's. Released in 1994 (after the original Doom) Freaks! is a decent looking game with a weird mechanic: Your character moves forward and backward smoothly, but when turning, you turn instantly at 90 degree angles, making the game feel somewhere between a FPS and a turn-based first-person RPG. You shoot at enemies and hit them if they are directly in front of you. So it's gameplay is more basic than even Wolfenstein 3D. There is only a single weapon, and you don't collect any items or powerups as far as I know. It's a shame because it has some pretty great art, although a little bit gruesome for kids! The original author(s) made a new version available (along with the source code) which runs in Windows natively and has actual FPS turning, so check that out here: Freaks 2.x Windows Port
